Sam Warrick is aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the longest time spent playing an online strategy game this weekend.
Warrick, 16, started playing “Civilization 5” at 10:08 a.m. Saturday at All About Fun Games and Collectibles in Escondido. In order to beat the Guinness record — set at 24 hours, 10 minutes, by a man in Australia — he’ll have to play all night and at least until 10:19 a.m. Sunday. His goal is to create a comfortable margin and play for at least 27 hours.
The record attempt is being sponsored by the store, which is providing witnesses to follow the very strict guidelines required for a Guinness record. Warrick is allowed one 10-minute break every hour, though he can skip breaks to build up a larger break. As of 4 p.m. Saturday, he was nearing his sixth hour of play and had stopped for just one three-minute bathroom break.
Fugo said witnesses will switch out every four hours and are required to record Warrick’s breaks to the millisecond. Steve Warrick said he and his wife, Shelley, will stick it out all night with their son. Store employees and numerous friends — including Sam’s field hockey team — have been stopping by to offer support.
